Getting started

What Addiction Solitaire is, whether it is free, and how to start a game in your browser.

What is Addiction Solitaire?

Addiction Solitaire is a single-player card game played with a standard 52-card deck. The Aces are removed and the other 48 cards are dealt face up in four rows of thirteen, leaving four gaps. You fill each gap with the next card up in the same suit as the card on its left, working towards four rows that each read 2 through King in one suit. When you run out of moves you can shuffle the loose cards and redeal.

Is Addiction Solitaire free to play online?

Yes. addictionsolitaire.app is completely free and runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to buy, download, or install, and there are no video ads, premium tiers, or paywalls. Open the page, press Play, and a game is dealt.

Do I need to download an app or create an account?

No. The game is the website — a 100% browser-based build with no app store download and no sign-up. Your stats are saved locally in your browser, so there is no login to manage.

Where does Addiction Solitaire come from?

Addiction belongs to the gap-filling family of patience games, alongside Gaps, Montana, and Vacancies, in which cards are rearranged into ordered rows by moving them into holes. The name Addiction is the one used by many online card sites; the game has no single documented inventor, and older sources differ on details such as how many redeals are allowed.

Is this the same as the AARP Addiction Solitaire?

This is an independent version of the same game — the 48-card layout and gap-filling rule AARP’s Addiction Solitaire is known for — built as a fast, lightweight page. It adds unlimited undo, hints, keyboard play, and local stats, and it allows three redeals, a common limit. We are not affiliated with AARP.

Rules and redeals

How gaps are filled, why the first column takes only 2s, and how the three redeals work.

How do you play Addiction Solitaire?

Move a card into a gap only if it is one rank higher than the card to the gap’s left and of the same suit. The first column accepts only 2s. Nothing can follow a King or another gap. When no card can move, redeal: all cards outside a solved run from the left are shuffled and dealt back, with one gap after each run. You have three redeals. Win by completing all four rows.

Why can only a 2 go in the first column?

Each row builds from 2 up to King, so the leftmost space of a row is where the 2 belongs. With no card to its left, the first column has nothing to match a suit against, so it takes any 2 and the 2 chosen sets the suit for that row. Aces are out of the game, which is why the sequence starts at 2.

How many redeals do I get?

Three per game, on top of the initial deal. A redeal collects every card that is not part of a solved run from the left edge, shuffles them, and deals them back with one gap after each row’s solved run. You can redeal at any time, but you cannot undo across a redeal.

Why does the game say there are no moves left?

Every gap is either right after a King, right after another gap, or waiting for a card that is not allowed to move there. When that happens the Redeal button lights up. If all three redeals are already spent, the game ends and counts as a loss.

What are the controls?

Tap or click a card outlined in gold to move it into its gap, or tap a gap to move the card that fits it. On the keyboard, Tab moves between cards, Enter or Space plays one, N deals a new game, R redeals, U undoes, H shows a hint, and M toggles sound.

Can I undo a move?

Yes, as many times as you like — until you redeal. A redeal shuffles cards at random, so it cannot be reversed and it clears the undo history.

Can a card in a solved run move?

No. Cards that form an unbroken 2-upwards run of one suit from the left edge of a row are locked, marked with a gold underline, and are never moved by a redeal. Because each gap takes only one specific card, no legal move would ever pull one of them out.

Winning and odds

Whether every deal is winnable and how to give yourself the best chance.

Is every game of Addiction Solitaire winnable?

No. Some deals cannot be won however you play, and because redeals shuffle the loose cards, luck plays a real part as well as skill. Expect to lose more games than you win. If a deal starts badly, deal a new game — it is instant.

How do I win more games?

Before every move, check which gaps you will open and which you will close. Avoid leaving gaps behind a King or beside another gap, start rows with a 2 whose suit is easy to finish, and put your effort into the row that is furthest along. Hold redeals until the board has no useful move left, and use undo to test a line before committing.

What is the best opening move?

Scan all four gaps and the cards each one needs. Prefer a move that puts a card into its final place, and avoid one that leaves a new gap directly behind a King. If several 2s could start a row, look at how far along each suit already is.

Why did my win streak reset?

The current streak counts consecutive wins. Starting a new game before finishing the current one, or losing a game when the redeals run out, resets it to zero. Your longest streak is kept as a separate best.

Devices, saving, and accounts

Mobile play, supported browsers, local progress, and why a streak might reset.

Does the game save my progress?

Your games played, wins, best time, fewest moves, most cards placed, win streaks, and sound setting are saved locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no account. Because the save lives on the device, a different phone, a new browser profile, or cleared site data looks like a fresh start. A game in progress is not saved if you close the tab.

Can I play Addiction Solitaire on mobile?

Yes. The layout is built for touch: the full 4 × 13 board and the controls fit on one portrait screen, you tap a card to move it into its gap, and a new game is instant with no page reload.

Can I play offline?

The game needs a connection to load the page the first time. After that, some browsers may keep the tab playable without a network, but there is no dedicated offline app or installer.

How do I reset my stats?

Open Stats under the board and use Reset progress, then confirm with a second tap. That clears games played, wins, best time, fewest moves, most cards placed, and streaks on this browser, and cannot be undone. Your sound setting is kept.

Which browsers are supported?

Any current browser with JavaScript: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop, plus their mobile versions. If cards do not respond, update the browser, allow scripts for this site, and reload.

Rules not listed here follow standard Addiction: fill gaps with the next card up in the same suit, keep 2s in the first column, and redeal when you are out of moves. For who publishes the game or a bug report, use About Us. Legal details are on Privacy and Terms.
